Medical Expenses in a Personal Injury Lawsuit

Personal injury lawsuits exist for the purpose of reimbursing you for all expenses incurred as a result of being injured either intentionally or by negligence on someone else’s part. You may also seek compensation when the injuries are related to accidents, such as vehicular accidents or slip and fall accidents. However, you may not know exactly what medical expenses are covered under a personal injury lawsuit claim.

Hospital Bills

If your injuries were severe enough to require a hospital visit or hospitalization, these bills would be something you could sue for in your lawsuit.

Treatments and Medicines

Whatever treatments or medicines you received to help heal your injuries may be included. This includes treatments you receive, such as physical therapy or mental health counseling as a result of the accident.

Cost of Medical Equipment

If you needed crutches, a walker, a cane, etc., to get around after the accident, the costs you incurred can be part of your lawsuit. Keep the receipts because your lawyer will need them as proof of your purchase and use for the equipment. Even if you just rented the equipment and returned it once you no longer needed it you can include the expense.

Co-Pays for Follow-up Doctor’s Visits

Quite often emergency room doctors or urgent care doctors will want you to follow up with your regular doctor after they treat you and your injuries. Any and all co-pays for follow-up visits with your regular doctor or a specialist that you will need to continue seeing are considered valid expenses for a personal injury lawsuit. If you’re not sure if an expense is worth including, just ask your lawyer.
